Who is Taleb Abdul, suspect in Germany Christmas market crash that killed four?

A driver rammed a car into a large crowd of revellers at a Christmas market in central Germany on Friday evening, killing at least four people and injuring more than 60 before he was arrested, authorities said on Saturday.

A young child was among the dead. Police said they had arrested a 50-year-old Taleb A from Saudi Arabia who has been living in Germany for almost two decades.

Who is Taleb Abdul, suspect in the deadly crash?

- The suspect, identified as Taleb Abdul Jawad, is reportedly a doctor and psychotherapist who had come to Germany in 2006 as a refugee.

- He settled in Bernburg after acquiring his official refugee status in 2016.

- He was reportedly born in 1974 in Hofuf, a city in Saudi Arabia, where was unable to express his atheist thoughts.

- The suspect's past social media posts (his X account now remains suspended) reveal views that are critical of Islam. As per a report in India Today, Taleb is an ex-Muslim and a critique of Islam. He supports Alternative for Germany, which is a far-right political party in the country, and has an anti-immigration stance.

- As per the publication, Taleb is wanted in Saudi Arabia on charges of terrorism and smuggling of girls to European Union countries from the Middle East. However, it is reported that despite the Middle Eastern country's charges, Germany offered him asylum and refused to extradite him to Saudi Arabia.

Calling this "insane", X owner Elon Musk wrote: "Whoever refused to extradite a murderer deserves to be punished severely!"

As news of the attack broke, Musk, the billionaire allied with US President-elect Donald Trump, criticised Scholz and called on him to resign.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who sent his thoughts to those affected in a post on social media platform X, is expected to visit the scene on Saturday with Interior Minister Nancy Faeser.
