Jawan prime suspect in killing of Bulandshahar cop

An army jawan has emerged as a prime suspect in the killing of Subodh Kumar Singh, the in-charge of Syana police station during Monday's violence following the recovery of animal bones in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahar district.

According to sources, the army jawan, identified as Jeetu Fauji, who is posted in Kargil, Jammu & Kashmir, was part of the mob, that had attacked the Chigarawati Police outpost on Monday.

Sources said that Jeetu, a resident of Mahaw village, which was very close to the site of violence, was seen firing in a video, which emerged on Friday and has gone viral on the social networking sites.

Two police teams have left for Jammu to arrest Jeetu, who fled after the violence, sources said.

"It appears from the video that Jeetu had fired the fatal shot at the SHO but we can only be certain after a thorough examination of the video footage,'' said a senior police official in Bulandshahar.

Senior UP police officials had also spoken to the army authorities in Jammu and they had assured to cooperate in nabbing Jeetu.

Jeetu's mother Ratankaur, however, denied that he was part of the mob and claimed that her son was at his place of work.

Meanwhile, the special investigation team (SIT), formed to probe the violence, on Friday submitted its report to state police chief O P Singh.

The report might be handed over to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath later in the evening, sources said.

Sources said that the SIT report had pointed at administrative failure in tackling the violence. Some senior civil and police officials in Bulandshahar were likely to face action, sources added.

Four persons had been arrested in connection with the violence. At least three saffron activists were also among the accused in the killing of the cop and raids were being conducted in different parts of western UP to nab the culprits.
