Delhiites need water, not liquor: BJP

Last Updated 23 February 2012, 20:58 IST

BJP has come down heavily upon the recent Delhi government's decision to open more liquor shops in the city.

Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly, Prof Vijay Kumar Malhotra addressed a rally organised by Bharatiya Janata Party as part of Jan Sangarsh Yatra on Thursday and said while people in the national capital do not get drinking water, the government is interested in providing more liquor shops to them.

“Chief Minister is concentrating on liberalising the excise policy so that more liquor shops can come up in Delhi and higher excise duty can be collected, when two thirds of its population do not get drinking water. Even those who get enough water to drink, complain of the very high charges. It would have been better had the government liberalised its policy towards drinking water,” said Prof Malhotra.

He said the decision of the government to open more liquor shops in the city would be fatal and would be a severe blow to the culture of the city.
