EDMC rolls back property tax hike

Timely payment of tax to get rebate

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation on Thursday rolled back a hike in property tax, and announced a 15 per cent rebate on timely payment of house tax.

Residents of East Delhi can pay property tax by August 15.

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation has reduced the rates of property tax to last year rates by extending rebate under section 177 of Delhi Municipal Corporation Act.

East Corporation Mayor Satya Sharma said that these taxes were revised due to implementation of Third Municipal Valuation Committee (MVC) report in April.

The MVC has changed the category of houses under the jurisdiction of the East Corporation.

“As per MVC some residential colonies which came under E category were brought under D category, which also increased their property tax. But after the roll back of
the hike the categories will not be  changed,” said a senior official.

East Delhi Mayor Satya Sharma said that according to the power vested with the corporation under section 177 of the DMC Act, 1957, by extending rebate the Corporation neutralised the enhanced property tax.

According to report almost 65 colonies were upgraded to higher categories, resulting in increase in property tax manifold.

Standing Committee, Chairman, Jeetender Choudhary said the civic agency has written to Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal about the roll back of the hike in property tax.

People discouraged
He also said that due to the increase in property tax, the tax collection was reduced by 25 crore in comparison to last year.

“Steep hike in tax rates discouraged people to pay property tax.”
Leader of House Sanjay Jain said that the East Corporation has been going through financial crises yet it does not want to burden the tax payers by increasing the property tax.

He also said that since last 10 years no new tax has been levied on the citizens by the East Delhi Municipal Corporation.
