<p>An HIV-infected woman died in Kanpur after being allegedly discharged from two government hospitals, despite her being in a critical condition.<br /><br /></p>.<p>The patient, a resident of Kanpur’s Barra area, died on Monday. She was forcibly discharged from a government hospital on Thursday last, though her condition was very critical, reports said.<br /><br />The relatives of the woman, whose parents had died a few years ago, alleged that doctors in two government hospitals where she had been taken for treatment, forcibly discharged her from there saying she was incurable.<br /><br />The relatives were too poor to take her to a private hospital. Even her last rites was performed only with the help of contributions from locals, according to reports.<br /><br />Protest<br /><br />Social organisations in Kanpur staged a protest on Tuesday in front of the district hospital against alleged denial of treatment to the woman. Local Samajwadi Party legislator Irfan Solanki, who was also among the protesters, said action will be taken against the erring doctors.<br /><br />The protesters carried placards and denounced the health officials and doctors allegedly responsible for not treating the woman. They shouted slogans and demanded their sacking for forcibly discharging her from the hospital.<br /><br />Probe to be ordered<br /><br />Chief medical officer Dr R P Yadav said he will order a probe to ascertain under what circumstances the woman was sent home.<br /><br />In-charge of Kanpur-based Anti-Retroviral Treatment centre Dr Chaman said that such patients were provided with ART kit. “The treatment will certainly have given some relief to her,” he said.<br /><br />It is not the first time that an HIV-infected patient died for want of medical care.<br /><br /> Earlier too, such patients had been denied treatment in government hospitals. In a few cases, doctors simply refused to keep patients in hospitals and refused to treat them.</p>
