Ban on fish: Delegation meets Goa minister

Mangaluru: A delegation, led by Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, met Goa Legislative Assembly Speaker Dr Pramod P Sawant, Goa Fisheries Minister Vinod Palekar, Chief Secretary Dharmendra Sharma and requested them to lift the ban on transportation of fish from Karnataka to Goa.

The delegation appealed to the Goa government to withdraw its order on banning sale and distribution of fish from outside the state.

“Responding to the concerns raised by the delegation, the Goa minister and chief secretary promised to take a suitable decision within two days in favour of the fishermen from Karnataka,” Kateel said in a press release.

Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District Cooperative Fish Marketing Federation President Yashpal Suvarna said the ban on fish transportation to Goa has caused a huge loss to the fish traders. Close on the heels of the ban, fishermen from Karnataka had stopped trucks from Goa and prevented the sale of fish from Goa in Karnataka, he
said.

The delegation included leader of the Opposition in Legislative Council Kota Srinivas Poojary, MLAs Vedavyas Kamath, Dr Y Bharath Shetty, Raghupathy Bhat, Roopali Naika, fishermen leaders Sadhu Salian, Ramesh Kotian, Sathish Kunder, Karunakar Salian, Vinay Karkera, Mohan Bengre, Nithin Kumar, Gopal R K , Santhosh Salian, Ravi Suvarna and Dayananda Suvarna.
