Online marketplace Askmebazaar on Wednesday unveiled its Next Day Delivery (NDD) model in Bengaluru. The city-based model is now live in 23 cities across India.

.
The Next Day Delivery model is based on the premise that customers like to have their products delivered as quickly as possible. “With NDD, customers are relieved of their anxiousness in waiting for a product ordered online,” says Marichi Mathur, Head, Next Day Delivery, for Askmebazaar.com.

The model arranges for products ordered on the website to be delivered within the next day. The company has made this possible by devising separate portals, within the website, for each city. Suppliers from a particular city list products that are readily available for delivery on the portal, and customers can order these products for NDD at no extra cost.

“This a hyper local model which cuts out inefficiencies on transport and stock-supply because suppliers only list those products which are readily available, and we use local logistics partners who can navigate efficiently through the city and arrange for delivery within the time frame,” said Mathur. “We rely on the expertise of our local partners who know better about the demand and preferences of the city,” he added.

“In this manner we are able to customise the marketplace for each city. Bengaluru for instance, has higher demand for bicycles when compared with other cities,” he said.

Heavy-lifting needed

The company has found that overall, customers like to have heavy and bulky products bought online delivered quickly. Customers spend a lot of money on products like refrigerators, air-conditioners, and washing machines. From having not seen the product or operated it, they tend to be sceptical about the product itself as well as the post-purchase services. “This is the problem we solve with NDD,” he said.

The Bengaluru city portal currently offers over 4,000 products across 13 categories. AskmeBazaar aggregates around 40,000 suppliers on its website.

Mathur says, “Being a marketplace, we are ‘capital light’, we have no inventory cost, no logistics cost, and we do not burn money in discounts. What we do is connect buyers with sellers, and with NDD we are making it convenient for customers (which is why they shop online) and increase business for local suppliers, so it’s a win-win situation.”

The company charges a transaction fee from suppliers for every transaction on the portal. The logistics partner gets a share of that fee.
