Freedom’s drive to help consumers get right oil for right price

Bengaluru: Freedom Sunflower Oil launched an extensive awareness campaign on Thursday, introducing the concept of ‘Pack Review System’ (PRS), with Indian cricket great Rahul Dravid — in a bid to empower consumers to check if each 1-litre pouch they purchase contains 910 grams of edible oil, as specified by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. 

The objective is to highlight the ambiguous practices by certain manufacturers to provide pouches that appear to be of 1-litre, but actually contain a lesser quantity of edible oil.

To demonstrate, Gemini Edibles & Fats India (GEF India), the makers of Freedom Sunflower Oil, compared the weight of edible oil in several pouches available in the market, in a pack that appeared to contain 1 litre of sunflower oil. However, several of the pouches, when placed on a weighing scale, were found to contain less than the expected quantity (910 grams) of oil, while the Freedom Sunflower Oil pouch met the required criteria. “This highlights the ambiguous practices being followed in the market and laid the emphasis on adopting the ‘Pack Review System (PRS)’ (i.e. Check the weight of oil) every time the customer picks a pouch of edible oil,” a statement said.
