A request by shops flouting zoning regulations in the East zone for an extension in the deadline to shut down their operations has been rejected by the BBMP.

As Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials began issuing closure notices and shut down some shops violating zoning regulations in HAL 2nd Stage last week, some traders approached CV Raman Nagar MLA S Raghu seeking time till they found a new place.

Raghu held a meeting with joint commissioner, East zone, Dr Ashok and some traders on Thursday. “Around 78 traders approached me saying they have received closure notices. It has been decided that there will be no negotiation of rules. BBMP officials will hear about ancillary units case-by-case, but all those flouting zoning regulations will be shut. When I asked resident welfare associations about this, they were reluctant to join in,” said Raghu.

Meanwhile, Dr Ashok also said they reiterated the implementation of zonal regulations at the meeting and said the BBMP will protect the interest of residents and will adhere to the High Court orders.

In a statement, the traders questioned why the BBMP does not act against illegal pubs and bars in the city and targets only Indiranagar.

Protest against new complex

Residents of Indiranagar and United Bengaluru will hold a protest on Saturday against the redevelopment of Indiranagar BDA shopping complex. The protest is against the felling of 171 trees to build the complex and also against the violation of the NGT buffer zone order, as the complex is situated close to Binnamangala lake.
