Student attempts suicide in prison

An engineering student, jailed for conspiring to kill his parents, has attempted suicide in the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison.

The student, Sharath (25), tried ending his life four times before the arrest by swallowing sleeping pills, drinking pesticides and coming up with self-made accidents.

Since his parents chastised him for his actions, Sharath designed a plan to eliminate them. He borrowed a pistol and live ammunition, but the police arrested him on July 5 and remanded him to judicial custody.

Chief Superintendent of Central Prison Somashekar said Sharath was lodged in the prison hospital and on August 21, he tried to strangle himself with a waist thread.

Prison officials have lodged a complaint against him in the Parappana Agrahara police station for repeated attempts to end his life, while also deciding to call for psychiatric counselling.
