Slush ain't only about dirt, discovers heritage city

Dasara 2010: Tourists trickle in over weekend

The contest saw perfect inaugural ceremony when Joint Director of Agriculture department K R Krishnaiah entered the slush pool, walking a distance and flagged off the slush race held at a paddy field in Varuna.

Though about 21 contestants selected among the top three from the seven taluks across the district was to contest only 18 participants turned up for the contest.

The contestants were divided into three groups of six members each after a selection through lottery for the convenience of running in the farm field. The enthusiastic youth had to cover 200 metre distance in the slush to pick a green flag on the other end of the field and return to the start point. Hundreds of villagers, friends and family members of the contestants gathered near the field to encourage and support their boys. At the league level, the contestants who bagged the first and second place in each group took entry to the final contest.

Winners

Nagaraju of Hosakote of Nanjangud taluk bagged the first prize in the race. Pradeep of Hosa Tirumakoodalu village and Satish of Varuna stood second and third respectively. “It was a long-cherished dream to take part in Dasara slush race. I am happy that I participated and also won the race,” Nagaraj said. The winners were awarded cash prize and a certificate.
