Using Facebook as interface not possible, say police

Traffic police have created a profile on the popular networking site where citizens can post pictures of potential traffic rule violations around the city.

But creating Facebook profile for other police departments "may not be feasible at this stage due to various reasons", says a letter written to public prosecutor by G D Pol, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order).

However, department will still consider the idea, it says. High Court had, on the last occasion, had asked why police do not use networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
The letter says that police already have "interactive" websites of their own, such as www.mahapolice.gov.in where complaints can be submitted.

Division bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and Pramod Kode had also asked last time why police do not adopt investigation methods of Criminal Investigation Department. Today, Prosecutor P A Pol sought four weeks' time for coming up with draft guidelines for ordinary police force, on the lines of CID manual.

The query had come during hearing of petition filed by Ashiwini Rane, whose husband Nikhil, a Pune-based builder, was murdered last November. She moved the court because there had been no progress in probe.The case has been now handed to CID. Rane's lawyer today said he was satisfied with the way probe was progressing
