Rain ruins City roads

Last Updated 08 November 2010, 19:35 IST

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has been left hapless on account of the cyclonic undercurrents leading to the incessant rain. While the BBMP is ready for repairing the roads,  it is still waiting for the sun to shine.

Most roads at Madivala are now strewn with rubbles. Rajashekariah, a garage owner in the area, said Maidvala Junction near St John’s Hospital has been a nightmare for motorists over a couple of years. “Once in a while the civic agencies come and patch up the road. The top layer asphalt disappears in a few months,” he said.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah said: “We are trying our best to fill these potholes across the City. But the weather upsets our plan.”  Siddaiah said the BBMP engineering division has been directed to repair the potholed roads at the earliest.

Meanwhile, the widespread rain caused by the cyclonic storm “Jal” wreaked havoc on several parts of the State on Monday. Deepavali celebrations were dampened in Chitradurga as rain had pumelled the district for over eight hours non-stop since Sunday evening. Nine houses collapsed while 990 were partially damaged. The district administration has estimated the loss at Rs 70 lakh.

The traffic on National Highway 13 was banned for a few hours as Mallapur tank overflowed for the second time in a week.
