Chillies grown by the farmers have been destroyed owing to the heavy rains that lashed over the taluk over the last few days.

“It looks as if the nature is angry with us,” says Giriyapura farmer Mallikarjuna. Chillies grown over 75 acres in Giriyapura have been washed away due to rains. The farmers had harvested chilly and kept it for drying in the barn.

Inspite of loss due to rains, neither the revenue department officials nor the agriculture department officials have visited the farmers to assess the loss.

It is said that chillies grown on 500 acres in Asandi, Parvathanahalli, Begur of Hirenallur hobli too have been destroyed in the rain.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, farmers said that Gram Panchayat or APMC should construct shed and hand it over to farmers so that they can protect their crops. At least now the government should come to the rescue of the farmers who have incurred loss due to heavy rain. The government should provide suitable compensation for the loss of crops at the earliest.
