Supersonic BrahMos missile test-fired

Last Updated 02 December 2010, 17:05 IST

Officials in the ITR said the eight-metre-long missile with a capability to hit targets located 290 to 300 km away and carrying warheads up to 300 kg was test launched at 10:58 am from a mobile launcher stationed at the premier missile testing
centre.

“All telemetry, tracking stations including Naval ships near terminal points have confirmed the mission’s success,” ITR Director S P Dash said. The test launch was jointly conducted by trained Army personnel as well as DRDO defence scientists. The sophisticated missile, however, was successfully test- fired earlier and was inducted into the armed forces. Thursday’s test-firing was a user trial.

BrahMos is also capable of being launched from multiple platforms like submarine, ship, aircraft and land based Mobile Autonomous Launchers.

A number of precautionary measures, including shifting of people from villages falling within 2 km of the ITR, was undertaken by the DRDO and the Balasore district administration before the test-firing.

“On the advice of the DRDO officials, we had made arrangements to shift about 3,000 villagers from around the ITR and have temporarily stationed them in safety shelters. All the villagers had been provided daily allowances,” a senior official in the Balasore district administration told Deccan Herald.
