When small is big

Last Updated 28 March 2013, 13:40 IST

A special photo frame, a glass bowl, a painting, a coffee table book, a candle, a clock... just about anything small can enhance the decor scheme of your home, points out Mala Ashok.

When one is talking about the design world, there is not too much talk about accessories. This is indeed surprising since these small components are critical in telling a room’s design story. The accessories describe who we are, where we’ve been and whom we love.

We learn who we are when we look at the accessories we buy. We learn where we’ve been by looking at the souvenirs on display. And looking at the photos on the walls or on display tells us whom we love. Looking at our accessories make us smile and bring back good memories.

Where can we get our accessories? The simple truth is — from everywhere. Any occasion and any location is a perfect one for accessories. You never know where or when you can pick up a new accessory such as an item for a side table or a cushion cover.

Take some examples of places to buy accessories. The obvious places would of course be local decor stores. But consider unorthodox visits such as your grandmother’s loft which is a veritable treasure trove. Travels are an essential time for accessory buying and souvenirs make great accessories.

Also consider visiting and bidding on items at estate auctions. Do not exclude business trips — a stroll down an alley during a business trip may be the perfect stop for accessory hunting. Remember, fabulous accessories can be found in just about any place, near or far from home.

Let us define an accessory. A special photo frame, a glass bowl, a painting, coffee table books, candles, clocks, just about anything small that adds to your decor is considered an accessory.

This leads to the question, “how many accessories do we need?” The answer is “less is more.” In other words, too many accessories cause clutter which is undesirable.
Accessories help change the look of the room because they allow us to keep on evolving, changing, and moving around.

We can continually move pieces around to change the look of the home. If you tire of a certain piece do not hesitate to box it and move to storage — that is if you think you may use it in the future. If not, give it away and feel good about yourself. If you have a lot of items consider holding a “sale” of these items along with unworn out children’s clothes.

The bottom line is to avoid over accessorising while keeping enough pieces to create a certain mood in a room.

So, what do accessories does one buy? The simple answer is to buy what you love, and what speaks to your instinct.

Once a solid design foundation has been created with painting and furnishing comes the exciting job of accessorising. It is the icing on the cake which though is made up of little things, matters big in the whole designing scheme.
