His last name may be Bachchan but in his entire career, Abhishek has always struggled like any new actor in town. Having tried his hand at different kinds of films, the fact remains that he has gained success with only a few characters. But what cannot be denied is his positive spirit. Each time the critics trash his performance, he holds his head high and tries to do something different with his next offering.

“It’s all in the attitude. I believe critics are an integral part of the film industry and I have never had any reservations against them. I take their word, be it good or bad, as a piece of advice,” says Abhishek Bachchan, who was in the City recently to promote his latest movie Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey.

A period thriller, the film is based on the book Do and Die: The Chittagong Uprising 1930-34 by Manini Chatterjee. Abhishek plays a school teacher, Surjya, who was the leader of a team of 64 revolutionaries who took part in the revolution. Playing a real-life freedom fighter was more of a responsibility than a challenge for the actor.

“Having read the book, I had all of my material laid out for me. But I didn’t want all those people, who have looked upto this leader, to be disappointed with my performance. That’s why I have taken extra care to portray him correctly on screen,” he says.

What has really worked for Abhishek is his versatility which has not restricted him to one particular genre. Ask him what role is he most comfortable portraying, and he immediately says, “None.”

“Acting is a difficult job. Every film and character comes with its own challenges and that’s what really keeps me going and also attracts me to films,” says Abhishek, who will be seen in a series of films including Uphill and Hera Pheri 4. With his dates being booked till next year, one wonders if he was disappointed that Hrithik Roshan was approached to play his father Amitabh Bachchan’s role in the remake of the classic film, Agneepath. “Not at all,” he is quick to answer. “Hrithik is a dear friend and I wish him all the luck for the film. I am very happy with the kind of roles I am being offered and the directors I am getting to work with. So I have no reason to be upset,” he says.
