Tunku Varadarajan is Newsweek international editor

Varadrajan, 48, joined the Daily Beast from Forbes, where he was executive editor of opinion. He has worked as assistant managing editor at the Wall Street Journal and bureau chief in New York and Madrid for the Times of London.

Announcing Varadrajan's appointment in an e-mail to employees, the news weekly's editor, Tina Brown, said: "I am delighted to inform you that Tunku Varadarajan, current national affairs correspondent and writer-at-large for The Daily Beast, will be editor of Newsweek's international edition."

Brown became editor of Newsweek when the storied newsweekly merged with the Daily Beast website, which Brown co-founded, last month.

Varadrajan has been a clinical professor at the Stern School of Business at New York University, an adjunct professor at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, and a lecturer in law at Trinity College, Oxford, from which he graduated with a law degree in 1984.

He is also the Virginia Hobbs Carpenter Fellow in Journalism at Stanford University's Hoover Institution. A British citizen, he and his wife live in Brooklyn and have three children.

"My news: Looks like I'll be editing Newsweek International http://on.wsj.com/eQNWYK (Time for a cricket column?)", Varadarajan posted Wednesday on Twitter.

Like Brown, he is an Oxford alum and began his career in Great Britain. The position sounds similar to editor of Newsweek International, which Fareed Zakaria departed shortly after Newsweek's sale.

The Daily Beast is an American news reporting and opinion website founded and published by Brown, former editor of Vanity Fair and The New Yorker.

The Daily Beast was launched in 2008 and in November, 2010 it announced a merger deal with the Newsweek.
