Forest officials have suspected that the wild elephants must have belonged to the herd of a elephant which was killed recently due to electrocution.
Farmers are seen bursting crackers and using fire to chase herd of elephants which have been visiting the fields for the last several days.
DCF N B Manjunath assured the farmers of suitable compensation for the loss.
Forest department said that Tarikere taluk has witnessed 74 cases of wild animals destroying crops since 2008. This includes 25 cases during 2008-09, 36 cases during 2009-10, and 11 cases during 2010-11. All the cases of crop loss have been reported in Udeva, Mallenahalli, Gangoor, Nandibatlu, Santhaveri, Jammapura, Hunasebailu in Lingadahalli hobli in Tarikere taluk. While domestic animals are killed by tigers and leopards, the crops are damaged by wild elephants and bison in the taluk, the officials said.
