The Hirebidanur constituency in the taluk bears witness to both successful development work as well as villages being sidelined by authorities.

Construction of cement roads has been started in several places in the taluk. Yet, several roads connecting villages are completely destroyed.

Residents of many villages are facing serious problems due to sheer lack of basic amenities.

Different levels

The Hirebidanur constituency has a total of six gram panchayats-Chikkakurugodu, Gangasandra, Alakapura, G Bommasandra, Hirebidanur and Gedare.

The development work carried out in the panchayat areas vary greatly. Alakapura, G Bommasandra and Hirebidanur gram panchayat areas are developing quite fast but the other three have not developed as expected.

Development work

Funds upto Rs four crores were released and used for development work in the Hirebidanur constituency.

Priority was given to solving the problem of drinking water in the villages. In some places, cement roads were laid. In other areas, schools were given buildings, veterinary hospitals were built.

Funds were used for construction of theatre halls too.

Connecting roads were built in places like Chikkakurugodu, Ramachandrapura, Gangasandra, Mudaganagunte, Doddahanumenahalli, Chikkahanumenahalli, Mallasandra and Vedalaveni spending upto Rs 48 lakhs.

Check-dams with supply of water through supplementary canals were constructed in Gangasandra at an expenditure of Rs five lakhs.

Flipside

In Hussainpur, Chikkahanumenahalli, Mallasandra and other places, roads are filled with potholes. Roads in all villages under gram panchayat limits do not have concrete covers.
People in the region struggle to use the roads that are in dilapidated condition. Drivers have a difficult time trying to manouevre their vehicles on such roads.

Lack of proper transport facility has forced children to walk to school, regardless of the distance. Worse, even senior citizens and patients have no option but to walk whenever necessary.

Overhead tanks have been constructed in different places at an expenditure of Rs nine lakhs. Therefore, the problem of supply of drinking water has been alleviated to some extent.

But the problem related to roads and transport continues in the villages.

Lack of grants hindering development

Work on all roads cannot be completed in the minimal grants that are released for the development of the Zilla Panchayat constituency. Developmental work can be carried out in the villages if the Government releases more funds.

Plans have been made to build houses in place of huts. Roads are in a dilapidated condition. But funds have reduced a lot in the last two years. Citizens too are unhappy that promises made to them are not fulfilled.

Life full of troubles, no sense of hygiene

Little importance has been given to development of Gangasandra by the Gram Panchayat members. The poor have not been provided with houses. The roads and drains are in very bad condition.

People are struggling to live surrounded by multiple problems.

Alakapura-Barjanukunte Road needs attention

Drinking water supply, roads and drainage facilities need a lot of improvement. The overhead water tank built under the Nalana project has not been handed over to Alakapura Gram Panchayat. Doing so will alleviate the water problem in the area greatly.

Also, residents in rural areas need to be taught the importance of maintaining hygiene.
