<p>Niladri Kumar has been playing sitar since his childhood. He gave his first independent concert at Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Puducheri when he was just six-years-old. <br /><br />He began his film career in late 1980s and was also part of the Masters of Percussion Tour alongside Zakir Hussain. He has been working with numerous music directors including A R Rehman, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Pritam. He was conferred with Sangeet Natak Academy’s Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, awarded to young musicians, in 2007. <br /><br />He also won the MTV Emmie Award for best classical/ fusion instrument for his album If. Niladri Kumar has transformed sitar into guitar and thus created zitar. Sitar was modified to create rock guitar sound out of it. <br /><br />Niladri Kumar reduced the number of strings on sitar from 20 to five.
