Women treated as objects: Nagaveni

Delivering the keynote address after the inauguration of State-level workshop on ‘Women empowerment’ organised by the Information Department, she said the quotes on women which consider women as god and supreme power have restricted women to be at home.

Reacting to the speeches of Zilla Panchayat President K T Shailaja Bhat and MCC Mayor Rajani Dugganna made at the inaugural function who reiterated the age old quotes on women, Nagaveni said, the quotes have not benefitted the women folk. “Reservation might have helped the women to participate in Panchayat administration to some extent, but even today there are hardly appreciable number of women in Lok Sabha and in the Central government offices. Women decorating the top most posts have been from elite classes and rarely the women from villages get such opportunities,” she said.

H Nagaverni lauded some of the Central government and State government schemes which have been initiated in favour of women. “The associations like Stri Shakti Sangha and schemes like Bhagyalakshmi have at least shown that women too are important in the society,” she said.

Earlier, inaugurating the workshop, ZP President K T Shailaja Bhat aked the women to climb the success steps without depending on reservation. “Women must show their capacity even in the absence of reservation,” she held.Resource person Prajavani Chief Sub-editor N A M Ismail stressed the need for holistic approach when it comes to women’s empowerment.
