Pak court accepts request to hold Davis' trial in jail

Last Updated 03 May 2018, 06:03 IST

The prosecution department of Punjab government had filed an application in the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Yousuf Aujla asking for Davis' trial to be held in the high-security Kot Lakhpat Jail where he is currently being held.

Aujla accepted the application and ordered that proceedings should be held within Kot Lakhpat Jail from February 25.

Davis could not be produced in a court on an earlier occasion and the hearing was conducted through video-conferencing.

Davis was arrested in Lahore on January 27 after he shot and killed two armed men he claimed were trying to rob him.

Police have rejected Davis' statement that he acted in self-defence and have booked him for murder.

The case has been complicated by revelations that Davis was working as a security contractor for the CIA.

The Pakistan government has rejected repeated US demands for Davis to be freed on the grounds of diplomatic immunity.
