Gandhi temple set for renovation

Last Updated 27 February 2011, 16:09 IST

Now the temple is ready for renovation after 63 years of its construction.

The villagers still uphold the values of Gandhian principles by offering prayers daily.

Though several ministers and MLAs had visited to the temple in the past, none of them had taken any keen interest in renovating the temple so far. Now with zeal and enthusiasm, the Gram Panchayat members are all set to renovate the temple.

The Gram Panchayat President has also plans to lay better flooring and construct a compound wall around the temple along with the renovation of the temple.

Temple history

It was said that Venkateshappa, Elenanjappa and Giri Gowda from Nidaghatta had taken part in the freedom struggle. Following the death of Mahatma Gandhi, the villagers received a message asking them to construct a temple in the name of Gandhiji within 48 hours.

The temple was inaugurated by the then Mysore Samsthana’s Minister for Law and Justice K T Bhashyam Aiyangar on February 22, 1948. Apart from temple at Nidaghatta, there is another temple in Mangalore where Gandhiji is worshipped daily.

The temple will be decked during Gandhi Jayanti and Independence Day. Several school and college students visit the temple during Gandhi Jayanti and Independence Day to pay tribute to the father of nation.

In fact, in the beginning a vast land was reserved for the expansion of the temple.

However, now the land has been utilised for the construction of Anganwadi building.
Neelakantappa, a senior citizen of the village says that there is a need to build a large Gandhi temple in this area.

The villagers have already approached donors to donate for the renonation of the temple.
