Many government schools are on the brink of closure, said Mayor Sandesh Swamy on Monday.

In his address at the inauguration of a seminar on education organised at Shikshaka Sadan here, he said the Lakshmipuram Government school where famous illustrator R K Laxman studied was closed last year. There are many such government schools which are on the verge of closure as parents prefer private schools for their children.

Obsessed with English

The society was increasingly being obsessed with private schools and English education, the Mayor regretted, and called upon government school teachers to work towards increasing the enrollments in their schools.

“If the trend continues, the weaker sections and the poor will be denied of education. A big number of people who passed out of government schools have excelled in life. The government schools can do more to attract and retain the students,” he opined and added that the Governments should also prevent the exodus of talents from India to foreign countries.

Scholarships awarded

Earlier, Zilla Panchayat president Sunitha Veerappa Gowda inaugurated the seminar.

She called upon the teachers to work hard to increase the enrollment of students in government schools  On the occasion, children of primary school teachers who scored top marks in SSLC and PUC classes were felicitated with talent awards and scholarships.

DDPI Nagendra Kumar, DIET Principal Ruksana Nazaneen, district president of Government School Teachers Association H B Basavaraju, North BEO R Karigowda, South BEO R Raghunandan and others were present.
