Hearing a petition by a City-based advocate, A V Amarnathan, the Division Bench comprising Chief Justice A S Bopanna directed the BBMP not to precipitate the matter.

Amaranthan in his PIL had stated that the BBMP had decided hastily to fell the trees to widen the stretch.

Contending that the BBMP had permitted the construction of Mantri Square mall and an apartment complex in the locality without considering its pros and cons, the petition said traffic jam became order of the day after the mall was inaugurated.

The advocate said, the State has turned a blind eye to violation of the building plan by Mantri Square.

Felling trees for the benefit of a private builder amounted to the breach of public policy, the petitioner  added, seeking the Court’s intervention to protect the tree canopy.
