Speaking to the newspersons, at a programme to provide identification numbers to the autorickshaws near traffic police station here on Wednesday, Additional Superintendent of Police Rajanna said initially, the numbering was meant for autorickshaws in the city and the same would be extended to taluks shortly. The process of registration of names and other details and allotment of number was in the final stages, he added.

There were more than 3,000 autorickshaws in the city but lacked proper system. Complaints of charging extra and refusing to come to the place demanded by passengers have increased in the recent days.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Channabasavanna said main objective of launching the system was to reduce complaints. The idea of allotting numbers to autorickshaws would enable people to complain against erring drivers. The autos were being given stickers with name Mandya and the details of the auto drivers. According to norms, the autos of other states were not permitted to ply in the city, but majority of autos were from other places. It would be put an end to this menace, he said.

Most of the auto drivers have extended cooperation to the department, which would benefit the passengers.
