Protestors seek sites, title deeds in district

More than 9,000 people have submitted applications to the administration

The protesters gathered in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office to press for implementation of their demands.

In a protest rally jointly staged by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha (KPRS) here on Tuesday, DYFI District President Muneer Katipalla said about 9,000 applications seeking the housing sites have been already submitted to the district administration.

More than 7,000 new applications will be submitted to the Deputy Commissioner.
Flaying the District-in-Charge Minister Krishna Palemar for allotting 34 acre in Thannirbavi to a builder, he said the elected representatives are keen to provide land to the industrialists and for real estate, but are reluctant to give a small piece of land to the poor.

“The Housing Minister who is deaf to the problems of the poor site less citizens, had recently come to Mangalore to take part in laying foundation stone for a residential complex worth Rs 1,200 crore. However, he had not mentioned any word on solving the housing problems of the poor,” he added.  

Chief Minister had promised of providing 3,000 houses for the poor every year in the election manifesto. However, the CM has forgotten his promise and is now busy releasing money for the construction of memorial, he alleged.

KPRS District President K R Shriyan urged the district administration to implement House Rent Regulation Act effectively in the district. “The site less and houseless people in the district, who are residing in the rented houses are put into hardship due to hefty house rent. Hence the strict implementation of the Act would solve the problems to some extent,” he said.

The protestors submitted a memorandum and the applications seeking sites to the Additional DC Prabhakar Sharma, who assured them of looking into the matter, on behalf of the DC.
