2 killed, 38 houses burnt in NC Hills

A group came to Phoiding village, dominated by Dimasa ethnic community under Mahur police station and 40 km from district headquarters Haflong, around 6 AM and fired at random killing two persons on the spot, official sources said, adding the injured were admitted to Mahur hospital.

As the villagers ran away in panic, the attackers set on fire 38 houses completely gutting them.

The attack followed yesterday's firing at Jorai village in the district by a group which shot at and injured a 45-year-old man and set ablaze 14 houses.

The 'Citizens Rights Protection Volunteers' (CRPV), a little known organisation, in an sms to local media have claimed responsibility for both the incidents and even threatened to continue their attacks on the Dimasa community, the majority in the district.

Clashes have been continuing in the district for the past two months as two local communities were engaged in a turf war in the area.
