AG gives opinion on Army chief's date of birth

Last Updated 19 May 2011, 19:07 IST

There was no official word on what he suggested to the MoD. The Law Ministry recently said Gen Singh’s date of birth was May 10, 1951 as shown in his matriculation certificate and not May 10, 1950 as shown in his UPSC form for the entrance exam to the NDA.

Not satisfied, the MoD had sought AG’s opinion to settle the controversy. Taking into consideration the year 1950, Gen Singh will retire on June 1, 2012. If the other date is accepted, he will continue in office till April, 2013.

As per rules, an army chief can serve for three years or up to the age of 62, whichever is earlier. The issue will determine as to who will succeed Gen Singh. If he retires in June 2012, Lt Gen Bikram Singh will be the most-likely successor and if he continues till 2013, Lt Gen K T Patnaik could succeed him.
