The villagers staged a protest against the proposed construction of a resort at peroor. Hundreds of acres of land has been allegedly purchased at Peroor to construct resorts.

The protestors said that the resort is coming up on the road en route to Malma hillock from Peroor Iguthappa temple. Hundreds of trees have been felled for the construction. “The water resource in the region has been damaged with a plan to construct a tank in one acre land,” the villagers said and added that the resort owners are using the reserve forest and Devara Kadu road. With mounting pressure from the villagers, the work on the tank has been stopped.

Cauvery Sene Chief Ravi Chengappa who visited the spot said the forest department is keeping mum when trees worth lakhs were felled in the region. “If the forest department fails to initiate action, then Cauvery Sene will gherao forest department on June 3,” he said.

Meanwhile, Thama Resort Managing Director Mathew clarified that Thamara Coorg resort is being constructed in Kakkabe Panchayat limits by following the rules. “No rules have been violated,” he said.

Speaking to presspersons, he said “license has been taken from the Gram Panchayat for constructing resorts. The work was started after taking permission from tourism and environment department.”

The locals will get employment once the resort is completed. About 170 acres of coffee land was purchased in the region. Of which, 2 acre land will be used for the construction of cottages. The greenery around the region will not be destroyed. The impure water is being treated within the resort and will be utilised for the parks, he informed.

Resort Director Senthil Kumar said that in the first phase, 30 cottages have been constructed.

The work on remaining 26 cottages will be undertaken in the second phase. Trees have not been cut for the cottages, he clarified.
