The memorial situated in the heart of the city stands as a testimony to the courage of Kodavas.

The Memorial that was built several years ago, was losing its charm due to the lack of maintenance.

It was surrounded by heap of mud, thus giving a sober look to the structure. However, now with the City Municipal Council undertaking the renovation of the structure, the time has come for the memorial to wear a new look.

The history of Martyrs Memorial goes back to 1940’s. The memorial was built in the memory of the soldiers from Kodagu who lost their lives in the II World War. An engrave on the memorial reads as follows: “This memorial has been built in the memory of those brave son’s of Kodagu who lost their life for the sake of democracy.”

Rs 15 lakh

CMC President Nanada Kumar said that the memorial will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 15 lakh. The work related to the construction of compound wall around the memorial, fountain and seating arrangements for the people has been started. “The work was scheduled to be completed by now. But due to few technical reasons, the work could not be completed. We have directed the contractors to complete the work within 15 days. We are quite sure that the work will be completed within the deadline,” he assured.

Once the Memorial is developed, the spot will be an added tourist attraction in the district. The tourists who must have heard of the brave stories of Kodavas will get an opportunity to view the memorial which reflects Kodavas courage.
