Centre seeks views on single entrance test

Last Updated 12 June 2011, 18:09 IST

Tentatively named National Test Scheme, the test has been mooted on the lines of Scholastic Aptitude Test or Graduate Record Exam (GRE) adopted in the US. The Department of Science and Technology has designed a opinion poll to seek public opinion on the proposal.

In a note on the underlying principles and philosophy of the proposed examination, DST Secretary T Ramasami, says the new examination should test students for their ability rather than preparedness. The test should also look into supporting representation based on region and income levels, bridge rural-urban divides, reduce burden on faculty, and match the rigour of the best national tests.

Consultations will be held with stakeholders in six phases. First, opinion will be sought through a public poll, followed by a discussion with states and school boards.

To participate in the public opinion poll, visit http://india.gov.in/nts/ntshome.php. The poll is open till June 21.
