ITBP team conquers Mount Satopanth peak

Last Updated 14 June 2011, 09:57 IST

The team, led by DIG Harbhajan Singh, unfurled the national flag atop the peak. "Mount Satopanth is considered one of the toughest peaks to climb. The most dangerous part is its ridge situated at about 6,300 meters. It requires fixing of ropes by expert mountaineers.

This ridge can be crossed only with help of these ropes. The peak was first climbed in 1947 by Andre Roche, a Swiss mountaineer," an ITBP spokesperson said here.

The expedition was flagged off from the state capital Dehra Dun on May 20. The ITBP is preparing to send an expedition team to Mount Everest next year to commemorate its Golden jubilee of establishment. This expedition is a part of the preparations for conquering the top peak, the spokesperson said.
