Palike monsoon plan off the track

Last Updated 15 June 2011, 19:23 IST

According to the initial plan, the Palike was to take up desilting 301.63 kilometre of primary drains and 562.97 kilometre of secondary drains in its eight zones.

Commissioner Siddaiah in the previous council meeting had stated that desilting would be completed by June 30. A sum of Rs 36.13 crore has been released for the project. With persistent delays in inviting tenders and issue of work codes, the Palike now faces an uphill task of completing desilting in the next 15 days.

Sitting on the files

However, the Palike is stuck with issuing work orders since the standing committee on ward works is sitting on the files over the last 15 days.

BBMP officials said the projects had been finalised and were awaiting final approval.

60 per cent

“Tenders have been finalised and approval from the standing committee is awaited,” an officer said. Siddaiah, replying to a query in the previous Council meeting, had said that at least 60 per cent of the desilting work in the City was to be completed by May and the rest by June 30.

However, it seems that the major portion of the drains which extend to more than 863 kilometers, still remains untouched.
