Police quoting family members said, on Friday, Nayak had gone to see the recently released Oriya movie, “Baisi Pahache Kheliba Mina”, whose storyline is based on predictions made in “Malika”, an ancient Oriya manuscript, that the world will be destroyed soon.

The film shows in graphic detail how, as per the predictions in the manuscript, giant tidal waves from the sea move towards the mainland and submerge human habitation in an attempt to end the civilization. The film reportedly shows the catastrophe occurring in 2012.

After returning home, a mentally disturbed Nayak asked his wife to give some money to buy a bottle of liquor and when she refused he started scolding her.

“What is the need to save money when we all are going to die in 2012,” a police official quoted the mason as saying to his wife.

Soon after he took out a blade from his shaving kit and started slashing his face and arms, shouting that it was better to die today instead of dying on doomsday when sea waves would kill everybody. His neighbours, however, said he was already in a drunken state when he returned home.

They shifted  Nayak to a local government hospital besides informing the police.

The mason admitted before the police that he was totally disturbed after watching the movie and thought that the predictions on doomsday will come true and consequently attempted suicide.
