2 killed, 60 injured in clash between farmers and police

The boy and a man, both unidentified, were declared brought dead at two private hospitals, hospital sources said.

Over 10,000 Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) activists, led by its Secretary Akhil Gogoi, gathered at Dispur Last Gate to protest eviction of encroachers but after a meeting marched towards the state secretariat and tried to forcibly enter the high security zone, Guwahati Senior Superintendent of Police Deepak Chouwdhury said.

When the police prevented the mob from entering the secretariat the protestors turned violent attacked the police, pelted stones and torched parked cars, he said.

The police fired in the air after a lathicharge failed to disperse the mob, Chowdhury said.
A number of policemen were injured in the mob violence, he said.

The mob subsequently headed for Guwahati-Shillong Road from Dispur area continuing to burn private and government vehicles and pelting stones, he said.

Police reinforcements were rushed to the area with orders to shoot at anybody indulging in violence.
