Muniyamma from Tamil Nadu was a resident of the densely-populated slums behind old Binny Mills building on Bellary Road.

Around 3 pm, a portion of the wall collapsed and the elderly woman was buried under the debris. Dhanush, her 18-month-old grandson, who was playing nearby, escaped unhurt, said RT Nagar police.

Muniyamma’s son Velu, a pushcart vendor, had occupied a small strip of open space adjacent to Raja Kaluve. He constructed a small house with asbestos sheet roofing and was living in it.

The wall that collapsed separates the victim’s house from a public toilet in the area. Overnight showers and poor quality construction materials led to the collapse, police said.

Annadurai, a neighbour, told Deccan Herald: “Minutes earlier, I saw Muniyamma seated near the wall while Dhanush was playing close by. Chitra, her daughter-in-law, was in the bathroom. Suddenly, I heard Muniyamma’s cries and rushed for help. A few others also joined in. Before the cops and other department officials could arrive, we pulled her out and took her to the nearby hospital.”

A one-and-half-year old child too suffered injuries in the mishap and is being treated at a private hospital. He is said to be out of danger.
