Haryana invokes Epidemic Act to tackle swine flu

Regulations of the Act would remain in force upto one year, an official spokesman said here last night.

These regulations shall be called Haryana Epidemic Disease, A H1N1 Influenza (Swine Flu) Regulations 2009, he said.

Under these regulations, it would be obligatory on the part of private hospitals to notify the government hospitals in their respective areas of any patient reporting swine flu-like symptoms.

Meanwhile, Haryana Chief Secretary Dharamvir has said that there was a need to launch an awareness drive in schools and colleges about swine flu.

Inaugurating a dispensary and computer lab in the hostel wing of Haryana Institute of Public Administration (HIPA) Gurgaon, on Mionday, he said shutting schools was not the solution and instead parents should refrain from sending sick students to school.

Haryana has so far reported 38 positive cases of swine flu, out of which 27 have been discharged from various hospitals while 11 are still undergoing treatment.

Delhi was the first to invoke the Epidemic Disease Act to force an influential person to undergo testing and treatment for the disease, followed by Maharashtra where six persons have succumbed to swine flu.
