Bharatpur violence: Situation under control, curfew relaxed

Last Updated 17 September 2011, 12:30 IST

The district administration relaxed the curfew for five hours from 11 am to 4 pm . Special Task Force and Rajasthan Armed Constabulary are keeping a tight vigil in the entire area, police said.

"The situation is under control and normalcy is returning. However, the security forces are patrolling in the area and keeping vigil," a police officer said.

Yesterday, a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot decided to hand over the case to the CBI. A judicial inquiry by a retired high court judge was also ordered.

Bharatpur district collector Krishna Kunal and SP Inglaj Dan were removed from their positions yesterday and are under Awaiting Posting Orders (APO) status.

Gaurav Goyal and Vikas Kumar are the new district collector and SP of Bharatpur respectively.

Eight persons were killed and at least 21 others injured on Wednesday in a clash between two communities over a land dispute at Gopalgarh in Bharatpur, forcing the district authorities to impose curfew in some areas.

According to police, incorrect entry of land meant for digging a pond as a graveyard in government records by a local patwari was the cause of the clash.
