“The varsities should make use of technology and lay stress on e-learning. There is scope for learning more through the exchange of information among the universities. Every university should have a conference hall,” he said.

The Governor was delivering the presidential address at the inauguration of a three-day international conference on ‘Open and distance learning in global environment: Issues and challenges’ organised by the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) in the city on Wednesday.

“Open universities can provide education of global standards through the use of technology,” Bhardwaj said. Karnataka enjoyed a pre-eminent position in the area of information and technology, he said, adding that KSOU can make use of this advantage to provide higher education to more people in the country.

The Governor called upon the faculty and students of universities to inculcate discipline and a sense of responsibility among themselves, as otherwise the standards of higher education would come down.

The conference was inaugurated by Prof V N Pillai, Vice-Chancellor of the Indira Gandhi National Open University. John Daniel, Chairman of Commonwealth of Learning, Canada delivered the keynote address.

More than 500 delegates, including vice-chancellors of open universities from across the world are taking part in the conference. They will be discussing the contributions of distance education in the international level during the conference.
