Last Updated 21 September 2011, 17:41 IST

The incident took place at Brahmanon Ki Babdi village in Udaipur district on September 12. The khaap panchyat had also had the hair of the youth and woman chopped off, besides forcing them to parade through the village in their undergarments.

The matter, however, came to the notice of Udaipur police only on Wednesday through an informer who also gave the footage of the incident shot in his  mobile. Soon after an FIR against the members of the panchayat and in-laws of the woman were lodged at Dabok police station and four persons arrested.

Case filed

On Wednesday, the police, taking a suo motu cognizance of the incident, arrested four persons and lodged an FIR.

According to police sources, the woman was married and had three children and was accused of having an affair with a 21-year-old man for the past two years. The woman’s husband is working in Mumbai.

A few months ago when he came to the village he charged the woman with having an “extramarital” affair and reported the matter to the elders of the Brahmin-dominated village.

“On September 12 the khaap panchayat  summoned  the woman and his alleged paramour before the elders. Though they refused the charge of illicit relations the panchayat was not ready to listen. As a disciplinary action they were thrashed and paraded in the village half naked,” Udaipur’s Superintendent of Police Alok Vashishtha said.

“An FIR was lodged against at least 12 people, including the husband and inlaws of the woman, at Dabok police station,” SP said. The police arrested four members of the khap panchayat in connection with the incident.
