Longding becomes 17th district of Arunachal Pradesh

Longding, the new district has been carved out of the present insurgency - hit Tirap district, and its headquarters would be set up at Longding, one of the oldest sub-divisional headquarters.

With the new district, the total number of districts in the state rose to 17.
The district sharing border with Myanmar and Nagaland, is inhabited by the Wancho community who are dependent mainly on jhum cultivation.

With low productivity the district was considered as one of the most backward districts in the state.

"The state government had constituted a high power committee on June 23, 2010 for finalizing the boundary and creating the said district. Accordingly, the committee on August 11, 2010 had submitted its report and recommended for creation of the district," Gamlin said while participating in the debate.

The new district would comprise the administrative units of Longding, Kanubari, Pongchau, Wakka, Pumao and Lawnu excluding Naitong Village which falls under Borduria Village Reserve forest, he said.

"The creation of the new district will meet the aspiration and long felt demand of the people and also enable the government to run the administration effectively to achieve speedy development in all fronts," Gamlin added.
