Chided for overuse of mobile, teenager commits suicide

Police said Sumaya, a class 7 student at a government school on Lalbagh Road, left no death note.

The girl had poor attendance in school and wanted her parents to meet the teachers and get her permission to attend school after a break.

On Tuesday, her mother caught her speaking on the mobile phone in the bathroom. Angry, she snatched the phone from Sumaya, removed the SIM card and broke the handset. Upset, the girl hanged herself when her parents had gone out to visit an ailing aunt.

Neighbours told police that Syed Mohammed, who works in a chicken stall, and his wife Salma had five children and Sumaya was their second daughter.

In another incident, a woman who lost her husband a few months ago committed suicide at her house on 17th Main Muneshwara Block, Patallamma temple in Giri Nagar.

The victim, Mahalaxmi, 21, was the daughter of a priest. Mahalaxmi’s brother Siddaramaiaha, who is also a priest, told the police that his sister was staying with him in the house provided by the temple authorities after her husband’s death six months ago.

Her husband Gururaj, who had some health complications, had also hanged himself.

Mahalakshmi’s brother told the police that this may have forced her to take the extreme step.

Succumbs to burns

A 23-year-old homemaker succumbed to burns at the Victoria hospital on Tuesday.
Pooja was married to Praveen Kumar, a pharmacist, and the couple had a two-year-old daughter.

Police said Pooja came in contact with the flame while preparing tea and the fire engulfed her. She was rushed to a hospital immediately.

The police investigated into the couple’s life to check for any foul play, but minutes before she breathed her last, Pooja in her declaration before the tahsildar said it was an accident.

Two held for robbery

The Shivajinagar Police said on Wednesday that they had arrested two out of the three people who had allegedly attacked an Andhra Pradesh-based fish merchant and robbed him of Rs 2.42 lakh on November 19.

“We have recovered Rs 20,000 and the bike they used,” the police said.

The accused had allegedly accosted Mastan (the victim) at the playground near Ulsoor swimming pool and took away his money around 12.30 am.

Those arrested are Syed Moin and Mohammed Anees from Neelasandra and Lingarajapura, respectively.

In another case, the Cubbon Park police have arrested Somashekar for selling fake marks cards of institutions of various states.

“The interrogation of the accused revealed that two more persons –– Sudheer Kumar and Amit Kumar –– are involved,” the police said.

The police have seized several marks cards.

Gold, silver articles stolen

Thieves allegedly struck at a house on 17th Cross, 9th Main, ISRO Layout, and decamped with gold and silver articles worth lakhs of rupees on Tuesday.

Seshadri told the police he had been to Chennai for two days and when he returned, he found the house door open and gold, silver ornaments and cash missing from a ransacked cupboard.

At Vinayaka Layout in Boopasanda, burglars broke into a house and made off with an i-Pod, mobile phones and cash, house owner Satyasai told the police. The thieves cut the grill of the rear door to gain entry into the house, Sanjaynagar police said.

Four wheels of a tractor  parked inside the compound of Ramachandra’s house at Mahadevpura were stolen on Tuesday, police said. The vehicle was parked with the support of a jack and stones.

Mason slips to death

A mason slipped to death from the third floor of an under-construction building at Hosapalya in Madiwala locality on Wednesday.

Laxman (45), a resident of Mangammanapalya, was plastering the roof when the incident occurred. A severerly injured Laxman was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
