In Zilla Panchayat and other departments under its jurisdiction, a total of 1,633 posts are lying vacant in Group A, B, C and D category. There are 660 posts lying vacant in district health and family welfare department. In department of public instructions, there are 384 posts lying vacant. There are 188 posts lying vacant in the department of animal husbandry and 103 posts in the department of backward classes and minority.

In Udupi taluk panchayat, 22 posts are lying vacant and there is no staff in the audit section of the taluk panchayat, said TP EO.  “We have severe shortage of staff in our department. We have to manage the show with the available staff. Who will listen to our problems,” said the staff in health department. As Udupi district is in good position when it comes to health sector, many of the primary health centres which were sanctioned to the district, have been shifted to other districts, said officials in health department. However, there is a shortage of doctors to serve in the rural areas. Due to vacant posts including that of a typist in the department, the horticulture department is finding it extremely difficult in implementing various programmes. Similarly, the Kundapur taluk has large area under watershed department. The department concerned has written to the Zilla Panchayat to fill the vacancies like agriculture officer and agriculture assistant.

“The top officials want us to achieve the target. However, the sanctioned posts are lying vacant,” said an officer.

“In the administrative report sent to the state government, we mention the shortage of staff in each and every department,” said Zilla Panchayat CEO Prabhakar Sharma to Deccan Herald.

However, five to six staff will be recruited to watershed department soon, he added.
