The incidents of violation of model code of conduct have been on the rise as the elections to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly draws nearer. Ahead of the forthcoming polls, leaders of almost every political party have received showcause notices from the poll panel in the state.

Notices have been issued to Samajwadi Party (SP) state chief Akhilesh Yadav, Lok Manch leader Amar Singh, state BSP chief Swami Prasad Maurya and Union minister Salman Khursheed’s wife and Congress nominee from Farrukhabad Louis Khursheed seeking their explanations on reports of violation of the model code of conduct by them.

According to the state election office, a case has been registered against Akhilesh for holding an election meeting in Siddharth Nagar on Tuesday night on a busy thoroughfare despite repeated warnings from the police.

A similar notice has been served on Amar Singh after lunch packets were reportedly distributed during his election meeting at Manjhanpur in Kaushambi district a few days back, sources said.

Janata Dal (U) president Sharad Yadav has also been issued a showcause notice by the poll panel for travelling in a car fitted with red beacon to attend an election rally a few days back. Jan Kranti Party head Rajveer Singh has also been served with a similar notice after he was reportedly garlanded with currency notes at a party meeting at Bulandshahar.
