The body of a Class XIth standard student who had gone missing since Wednesday was recovered from a lake in South Kolkata under mysterious circumstances on Friday.

“Initial investigation revealed that it is a case of suicide but we are waiting for the post mortem report. Once the report comes in then only we will be able to tell the real cause of death,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Damayanti Sen said. However, the disappearance and the death of Riju Basak studying at La Martiniere school is shrouded in mystery.

According to the family, on Wednesday Riju went out in the evening telling his mother he has a programme at Max Muller Bhavan  and he would come back after that but at 6.39 pm Riju rang up his mother’s mobile to inform her he would be late. “But, when he didn’t come back at 10 pm we dialed his mobile phone. It was switched off and then we lodged a missing diary at Muchipara police station,” said one of his family member.

On Thursday, the family received a call where the caller said that a bag was found near the Bhawani cinema hall which is very near to the lake and from there Riju’s ID has been recovered. “We got the phone number from the ID card and called to inform you,” the caller said. However, when the family rushed to the spot they recovered the bag but there was no trace of Riju. But on Friday, some morning walkers noticed a body floating in the lake and  informed the police.
