Cauvery PU college, VVCE secure easy victories

An unbeaten knock of 78 (8x4s, 2x6s) by opener Ashun Kumar A Shetty and his 83-run opening wicket partnership with Dheeraj (36, 4x4s), helped Cauvery PU College to register a nine wicket win over Government First Grade College, Mandya in the second round tie of the Dell- KSCA Inter-collegiate knock-out cricket tournament conducted by KSCA Mysore Zone at the Gangothri Glades here on Sunday.

Batting first, Government First Grade College, Mandya scored 131 in 28 overs. Mahadeva Shetty (29, 3x4s) was the top scorer. Chandan (24) and opener Nithin Gowda (21) also contributed to the team’s score. Cauvery PU College skipper Bhuvan Ponappa (two for 24), Roshan K (two for 21) and Gaurav Gowda (two for 14) broke through the government college’s batting line-up.

In reply, Cauvery PU College sailed through to post 132 for one in 20.4 overs. A good start by Ashun Kumar Shetty and Dheeraj (36) helped their team to register an easy nine-wicket win. In another match, Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering (VVCE) secured a six-wicket win over St Philomena’s College and entered the pre-quarterfinals with this win.

Put into bat, St Philomena’s College were bowled out for a paltry 84 in 20.5 overs. Mustaq top scored with 31 runs (4x4s). Medium-pacer Ponappa took three for 20 and was supported by Somanna who took two for 11. Chasing the target, VVCE scored 87 for four in 21.4 overs. While captain B Rahul scored 39 runs (4x4s, 1x6s), Anush remained not out with 25 runs. Captain Shashank took four wickets for 24  for St Philomena’s College.
