An analysis of first 82 deaths (reported till August 30) reveals that 53 patients died within the first three days and 70 died within the first five days. “This means when those patients were hospitalised, their conditions were so critical that they could not survive beyond a few days,” said R K Srivastava, director general of health services in the Union health ministry.

Only six persons who were admitted in the hospital in early stages died.
The detailed death analysis shows almost 70 per cent deaths – 55 out of 82 – were in the age group of 16-45 years.

The findings are not in complete variance to the western pattern except among the seniors. An analysis by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Atlanta shows 9 per cent Americans – 26 out of 268 deaths – of more than 64 years were killed by H1N1. In contrast, only one person above 65 died in India.
