Fed up with being repeatedly asked to stop taking drugs, a 36-year-old property dealer killed his wife in north-west Delhi, police said on Tuesday.

Harpal Singh, a resident of Rishi Nagar at Rani Bagh, was arrested from Nihal Vihar, where he went into hiding after killing his wife, Jaspreet Kaur.

“We got a call at the police control room on Sunday about an assault on a woman at Saya Beauty Parlour at Rishi Nagar.

A police team went to the spot and found that the owner of the beauty parlour, Jaspreet Kaur, had been stabbed by her husband.

Some people saw him committing the murder,” said Romil Baniya, additional deputy commissioner of police (north-west).

Witnesses told police that Harpal Singh fled from the spot immediately.

Kaur was taken to Bhagwan Mahavir Hospital, from where she was referred to AIIMS trauma centre. She succumbed to her injuries on Monday.

“We got a call from the mother-in-law of the deceased. She said her son Harpal Singh was at the house of one of her nephews, Malkeet Singh, in Nihal Vihar. Singh was arrested immediately,” said Baniya.

Singh told police that he and his wife knew each other from their school days in Guru Harkishan Public School in Punjabi Bagh.

His wife’s family never approved of their marriage, so they tied the knot at Arya Samaj Mandir.

Over the years, he became an alcoholic.

“Eventually, he became a drug addict and his wife objected to this. The couple used to fight often due to his addiction to drugs,” said Baniya.

To make quick money and to serve his needs, he had also committed several crimes, including the abduction of his cousin brother in 2009.

Witnesses said Singh first asked his wife to forgive him when he turned up at the parlour, but suddenly he took out a knife and stabbed her.
